On Friday, February 25th, at Ioannina, the official opening of Epirus Food Bank was held by the President of Athens Food Bank, Mr. Panagis Vourloumis. Present at the opening ceremony were also Elisaf Moisis, the Mayor of Ioannina, and other representatives from the Food industry.
Mr. Vourloumis took the floor and explained that Food Banks manage food donations that are suitable for consumption, yet not marketable. These foods are distributed to breadlines and institutions free of charge and without racial, political, religious, or other discrimination, in order to tackle hunger and reduce food waste.
The umbrella organization for the European Food Banks is FEBA – European Food Banks Federation (www.eurofoodbank.org), with more than 400 members and is based in Brussels. Greece is represented by the Food Bank of Athens, which was founded in 1995. Food Banks also operate in Thessaloniki, Thessaly, and Drama, while more food banks are soon to be established in other areas of Greece.
