The Food Bank was established in 1995 as an independent and self-governing non-profit institution (Presidential Decree FEK 540/21.6.95). Since its establishment, it has been an equal member of the European Federation of Food Banks (FEBA), bringing to Greece the model and structure of the rest of Europe’s Food Banks. At the initiative of the Food Bank, food banks are also operating in other regions of Greece. These are different legal entities, which apply the same model in the region in which they are located, having a better knowledge of local needs and making use of local production surpluses.

The viability of the Food Bank is based on its capital and privately owned facilities, a gift from its founder, Gerasimos Vassilopoulos. At the same time, friends and supporters of her effort offer smaller or larger donations to cover operating expenses and the purchase of food.

The Food Bank fulfills all its obligations towards the state, without having received even €1 from state funds.

In accordance with the provisions in force, it has a Special Certification as non-profit Primary Social Care service providers of the N.P.I.D. (Government Gazette 2111/21.5.2021), as issued by the General Directorate of Social Solidarity of the competent Ministry.

It is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of 9 members, Panagis Vourloumis (President), Vangelis Kalousis (Vice President), Ilias Mousis (General Secretary), Zoe Thanopoulou (Treasurer), Athena Vassilopoulou, Xenia Papastavrou, Aristomenis Dionysopoulos, Andreas Vourloumis, Dionysios Kritikos . Dimitris Nedas is acting as General Manager.

As a non-profit institution, it is supervised by the Ministry of Finance, prepares financial statements in accordance with the Greek Accounting Standards and the company Deloitte Public Accountants has audited the financial statements for the years 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2016.

In addition, for the year 2022, SOL Crowe has conducted 4 reports of pre-agreed procedures in accordance with the International Standard of Related Services 4400, for the same number of “Emergency Food Fund” programs.
